Animals in New Zealand

Do you know anything about “Possum”?

I will introduce about "Possum".
“Possum” originates from the name of “Opossum” which live in the America, however “possum” is different from “Opossum” as taxonomy. “Possum” looks like a cat, weasel or squirrel. “Possum” came from Europe by European to hunt for their skin. In Australia, they are few number because they were decided as a protect animal, but in New Zealand, they were decided a subject as an extermination because they have non enemy. Then they are target to do hunting. By these reason, “possum goods” is a peculiar goods in New Zealand.

In Japan, there are a lot of animal like this, for example "Mouse" or "Rat", because they are nocturnal animals. Most of Japanese hate them, because they eat the food which people eat, the wall, and a cable such as a computer or TV and so on. And we have a lot of goods to catch them such as goods to get cockroaches. But in New Zealand, people like possum, although don't like too. In New Zealand there are a lot of possum goods. In japan, such goods are not except Mickey Mouse!

About "jack o' lantern"

We have some origins in the jack-o-lantern’s story.
Most famous story is the story that a man called "miser Jack" deceived the devil.
Jack arrived at the gate of the hell after he has died, he can’t go to the hell and heaven. Then he seems to have come to be called Jack (Jack of the lantern) from a thing it was given the turnip which he turned on a light of, and to continue walking the gloomy way without falling into the hell for business with the devil.

How to make it!
１. At first, prepare a pumpkin. The pumpkin’s color is orange is best.
２. Next, cut off the bottom of it and take the content out.
３. Take the seed of it and cut the skin of it thinly. You don’t throw out the bottom of it because the bottom you cut off is necessary later.
４. When the skin of it is thin, you write eyes and mouth you will cut off.
５. Cut the skin of it slowly like follow a line you write before by a fruit knife.
６. Push a nail and candle. Then the candle must be longer than the nail.
７. Set the bottom you cut off before and put some gummed tape not to fall the bottom.
８. At last, light a candle through the eyes and pay attention not to burn the skin of it.

Story of Halloween -jack o' lantern-

In the small island called Ireland in the Europe, there was a man called Jack who likes liquor, always drinks and deceiving a person. It was night of Halloween. When Jack drank as always in a bar, he met the devil, and the devil said "give me your soul". Jack said,"OK.I'll give my soul. But please give me another cup of liquor". The devil thought only one cup of liquor is OK. And he changed himself into the money to buy a cup of liquor. Then Jack put quickly the money in his wallet. Jack said "if you want to go out, you will have dealings". The devil agreed. Jack said "unless you took a soul from me for ten years, I'll go out you from a wallet.”

Ten years passed, that devil appeared again. The devil said "I get your soul in this time". Jack said "I understood.I'll give my soul. But will you take one apple on that tree?" The devil climbed the tree. Then Jack craved with a cross to a tree quickly. The devil is afraid of it and cannot stand. "Take it down, please take it down". Jack let the devil promise to never take his soul and took down the devil from a tree.

Jack got old and has died,“Can I enter the hell". The devil said "I can't get your soul. I promised". Jack was at a loss. "where should I go?" The devil said "go back to the place where you were". Jack has begun to return. The way was very dark, and wind awfully blew. Jack asked the devil. "Give me a light because it's dark, and I don't see a way very well". The devil gave one lump that blazed in hell to Jack. Jack put a lump in a turnip and made a lantern. And he started to wander in the world and the next world with the lantern. It was the opening of the trip of Jack who did not have a hope of this going.

The lantern which Jack had gradually became the symbol of the soul of dead people.In U.S.A., a turnip became the pumpkin.A turnip didn't have much friendly feeling in U.S.A., ]it seems to have been commonly used to make a lantern with a pumpkin because a lot of pumpkins were able to adopt it.

A movie I saw in summer vacation

【１０，０００ B C】
In this summer vacation, I watched the movie called “10000B.C.” The story is based on “A world in 10,000 BC”. People lived with mammoth there. And there were a small village.

Derry and Ebalet lived in the same village. And they loved each other. But one day, an unknown group came to the village and robbed her of their village. Then he went to find comrades to rescue her. He went to the new land to seek her but there was no her. Then he can’t meet with her but he got many comrades to battle with a man who is a leader of an unknown group. Therefore he became a leader to battle with him. At the last of long journey, he found a big pyramid there, and then he battle with him to get her back.

In this movie, a main actress is Camilla Belle. She also appears in “ANNIE”,“THE PATRIOT”,　“THE QUIET” and “WHEN A STRANGER CALLS ”. I think she is not so famous.(...sorry I don't know her.)This movie made by Roland Emmerich. And he made “Independence Day” and “The day after tomorrow”.

In short, this story is a battle between "ancient people" and "early man". And background is “B.C.10,000”.　I thought this movie has a roman or dream or something people want to know the past. But I think this movie genre is “love story”, because Derry and Ebalet love each other. And then it was also a destiny. I don’t like love story movie so much, but who dislike love story will be able to enjoy it! So you should watch it!
